Nurturing homegrown talent has always been an objective of James Legal and we’re particularly excited about our apprenticeship programme.
Yasmin Palmer, who works in the family department, joined the firm in May 2022. Anna Bisby, has been with the business for over year and assists the corporate/commercial team. Jessica Bennett, who was already with the company, is training to be a conveyancing technician.
Yasmin and Anna are both law graduates on a 3 year programme. Jess is studying to specialise in property law. The nature and length of the apprenticeship is tailored to the individual, depending on existing experience and career goal. The apprentices are employed directly by James Legal and spend 20% of their week in study. Apprentice solicitors meet the same standards as all other solicitors and pass the Solicitors’ Qualifying Exam (SQE).
Managing director, Simon Young, explained: “Our apprenticeship programme is a great route to qualification, while earning at the same time”. James Legal recognises that a combination of “on the job” experience and individual study provide the perfect grounding to develop the skills to become a successful lawyer. Importantly, our apprenticeship programme is much more accessible for a lot of people compared to the traditional route into law.
Meet the Apprentices
What is a typical day like?
Jess: I assist our residential property conveyancers with admin tasks to help their files run smoothy. From opening client files through to registering their purchase property at the Land Registry, I work with the team and meet client needs. https://www.jameslegal.co.uk/our-people/jessica-bennett/

Why did you decide to complete an apprenticeship?
Yasmin: I decided to complete the apprenticeship as I prefer a more hands-on approach. The main appeal for me was the opportunity to study for the Solicitors Qualifying Exams at the same time as developing my practical skills. https://www.jameslegal.co.uk/our-people/yasmin-palmer/

How is it juggling work with your study?
Anna: James Legal have been supportive of us all, and they ensure we are supported both at work and in our studies. On the study day, we are required to complete preparation work for each module and take a weekly test. As we receive on-the-job training which relates to the content of the course, this makes learning easier to manage and helps develop our knowledge of the area of study. https://www.jameslegal.co.uk/our-people/anna-bisby/

James Legal believe that hard working and talented people will flourish if provided with the right support, regardless of their background.
We look forward to seeing how Jess, Yasmin and Anna’s careers progress.
