Auroras Copywriting: How to Structure a Blog

On the back of my recent article about why members of the Business Culture should use the know-how section of the website, I’ve been asked about the best way to structure a blog, so here goes!

A well-written blog forms the cornerstone of any content marketing strategy. It helps to improve your search engine performance, while building authority in your sector. By providing compelling, high-quality content, you give your target audience a reason to keep returning to your website.

While blogs are widely used by businesses, some are more successful than others. There’s more to writing a blog than merely putting words on a page. A blog needs a clear structure so that answers can be found, and interesting ideas are easy to follow. With so many distractions competing for their attention, readers can quickly lose interest, skim past key points, and ultimately click elsewhere.

A strong blog structure provides the framework that keeps your reader engaged from the first sentence through to the final call to action. With the right structure, your blog is easier to read and understand, and better at delivering your messages.

Our experienced copywriting team are experts at structuring blog posts that get results for our clients.

Here’s how we do it.

Start With a Clear Purpose

Before you begin writing, it’s essential to know what you want your blog to achieve. Are you explaining a concept? Sharing your expertise? Introducing a product or service?

Having a clear objective will shape the way you structure your article. For instance, if your blog is designed to educate readers then it will look slightly different from one designed to convince and persuade.

Thinking about your audience can help you define your objective. What problems are they looking to solve? A blog that addresses a real need is more likely to keep readers engaged.

When you begin with a clear purpose and audience in the mind, the structure of the article can often fall into place naturally.

Begin With a Strong Introduction

The introduction is where you capture attention and convince readers to keep going. Evidence suggests that online readers make quick decisions. That means that your opening paragraph must immediately signal that the content is interesting and relevant.

A good introduction should do three things:

  • Introduce the topic
  • Explain why it matters
  • Give readers a reason to continue reading

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Keep it short and clear, addressing the reader’s primary concern, setting out the problem, and hinting at the solution.

The introduction serves as the doorway to the rest of the article. It should be engaging and welcoming, encouraging the reader to continue.

Break Content into Clear Sections

Ensuring readability is a key part of blog structure. Most people don’t read online content word for word, tending to scan the page looking for useful information.

Breaking your content into sections with clear subheadings makes it easier to navigate and understand. These should guide readers through the argument or story you’re telling or signpost them quickly to the precise information they are searching for. This kind of clarity also helps search engines locate relevant content.

Each section should focus on a single key idea. This creates natural flow, where readers can move from one point to the next without becoming confused or overwhelmed.

Readers also prefer short paragraphs. Two or three sentences in each paragraph is often enough to keep the blog post pacey, and the reader engaged.

Use Subheadings to Guide the Reader

Subheadings are essential to further break-up the content and make it easy to navigate. Well-written subheadings improve your search engine optimisation. Search engines use them to understand your content and the topics you’re covering.

Try to make your subheadings concise, descriptive, and clear. Someone should be able to skim read headings and subheadings of your post and still have a sense of what the article is about.

Add Value with Practical Insights

For a blog to stand out it needs to offer something that is useful or insightful. It shouldn’t just repeat information that readers could find elsewhere.

This might be unique insight, practical tips, examples, or answers to common questions. The goal should be to leave readers feeling that they’ve learned something valuable.

Structure should support this, with information organised logically, making it easier for readers to absorb and remember.

Finish with a Strong Conclusion

A blog shouldn’t just stop once the main points have been covered. A short conclusion pulls the threads together and reinforces the key message.

This is also where you guide readers towards the next step.

This might mean encouraging them to sign up to a newsletter, read another article, look at a product, or contact you to find out more.

A clear call to action helps to convert casual readers into people who have a relationship with your company or organisation.
