ACA Celebrates Hull's Rich Architectural Heritage at Holderness House Open Day

Alessandro Caruso Architects (ACA) recently visited the historic Holderness House during Heritage Open Days, gaining further insight into a landmark building whose future the practice has been appointed to help shape.

The visit offered the ACA team an opportunity to explore the building's architectural character and history in a more informal setting, while reflecting on the importance of protecting Hull's built heritage for future generations.

As part of its ongoing work with Holderness House Trust, ACA is developing proposals that seek to balance the conservation of the historic estate with its potential to serve new community, educational and charitable purposes.

Discovering the History Behind Holderness House

Heritage Open Days provide an opportunity for the public to explore historically significant places and learn about the people, architecture and events that have shaped them.

For the ACA team, visiting Holderness House was particularly meaningful given the practice's involvement in developing a conservation-led masterplan for the Grade II listed building and its surrounding estate.

The occasion allowed the architects to experience the property beyond the usual context of surveys, technical assessments and design discussions.

Observing the building's historic features, materials and spatial arrangements offered further appreciation of the qualities that make Holderness House an important part of Hull's architectural heritage.

Combining Conservation with a Sustainable Future

ACA's commission for Holderness House Trust focuses on exploring how the historic property and wider estate can be preserved, adapted and brought into more effective use.

The emerging masterplan considers opportunities for the Main House, Coach House, gardens and surrounding spaces, with the wider ambition of creating a sustainable Community and Heritage Centre.

Central to this approach is the careful protection of significant architectural features alongside improvements that could enhance accessibility, functionality and long-term viability.

For ACA, successful heritage projects require more than the restoration of historic fabric. They also involve identifying appropriate new uses that allow important buildings to remain active, relevant and connected to their communities.

A Personal Connection to Architecture and Heritage

The Heritage Open Day visit also had a personal dimension for ACA co-founder and architect Alex Caruso, who attended with family members, including his mother visiting from Sicily.

The occasion prompted conversations about architectural history, craftsmanship and the cultural importance of historic buildings, shared in both English and Italian.

It also highlighted how architectural heritage can connect different generations and cultures through a shared appreciation of history and design.

For a practice involved in healthcare, education, community and heritage projects, the experience reinforced the importance of understanding buildings not simply as physical structures, but as places with stories, memories and meaning.

Supporting the Next Chapter for a Hull Landmark

As the Holderness House proposals progress, ACA will continue working with Holderness House Trust to explore how the estate can be safeguarded while creating opportunities for future community use.

The project reflects the growing importance of sensitive adaptation and reuse in the built environment, helping historic properties remain viable without compromising the features that make them distinctive.

Through its involvement, ACA hopes to contribute to the long-term preservation of an important Hull landmark while supporting the Trust's ambitions for its future.

The Heritage Open Day visit provided a timely reminder of the building's significance and the responsibility involved in planning its next chapter.
