We’re giving three young people aged 16-18 years the opportunity to win a placement with the MIRC, supported by a 12-month mentorship with our expert scientists. The competition is open to sixth forms and colleges across the Humber region, where they will pitch real-world science ideas in a Dragon’s Den style final. Students won’t just submit an idea - they’ll develop it and present it in a live judging environment. We’ll be selecting one successful student from each of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, and North and North East Lincolnshire.
The UK Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills gap is currently costing the economy approximately £1.5 billion every year.
Almost half of STEM businesses are looking overseas to find the right talent. We aim to keep talent within the region.
Most students don’t encounter advanced fields like radiopharmaceuticals until university or later. We’re giving Humber students a head start.
We’ll be welcoming submissions from students of the four STEM subjects, science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The winners will be presented with their certificates at an annual dinner hosted by the Daisy Appeal, where sponsors, schools and families will be in attendance. We will cover the award through our PR team, and the students will have access to a copy for reference in the future.

If you’re a sixth form or college student studying a science and would like to design a scientific innovation that could meaningfully improve human life, we’re giving you the opportunity to bring that idea to life. Our Young Scientist Award is an incredible opportunity for students in the region looking to pursue a career within STEM.
By taking part in this competition, students can strengthen their UCAS and apprenticeship applications, build a long-term partnership with the Daisy Appeal and connect with real researchers, offering a first step towards their future STEM career.
We’re looking for tutors to support their students throughout this year-long process by helping with idea development, scientific accuracy and submission preparation, as well as accompanying students to events. We will be in close contact with schools and tutors every step of the way as they take part in this exciting opportunity.
Our Young Scientists Award will take place across the course of the academic year, and we’ve set out a timetable so schools and students understand what the competition entails.
Each mentorship will cost £20,000 per student, so we’re looking to raise £60,000 in sponsorship to cover the associated costs, including academic time, external visits, lab time, and so much more.

Our sponsorship packages start from £500, and our team at the Daisy Appeal are happy to discuss packages and bespoke options for key sponsors. We’re looking at running the Young Scientist scheme every year, so there is also an opportunity for multi-year sponsorship deals for companies that would like to provide continuous support.
