Fresh thinking Hull firm James Legal has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the support it has received for its campaign to help Hull & Humber businesses grasp the 2017 opportunity.
Among those backing James Legal – The Business 2017 is Maureen Foers OBE, Owner of Durban Limited and Sponsor of Women’s Enterprise in the Humber.
She said: “In many senses, businesses in Yorkshire & The Humber have had it tough in recent decades, having to battle against jaded national and international perceptions of what our region is all about.
“The fact that they have flourished despite this added weight is testament to the tremendous potential that exists here. Now that the tide is finally turning thanks to Hull City of Culture 2017, I’m waiting with baited breath to see what stellar successes will come out of our city region going forwards.
“I commend James Legal on the proactive role it is taking in supporting this business transformation process, and our campaign partners for getting behind the initiative and seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a real and lasting difference that will benefit everyone.”
So what exactly is James Legal doing?
Well, The Business – 2017 incorporates:
- A free quarterly business masterclass programme
- A competition with prizes totalling more than £30,000 for two promising businesses
- Free insights, information and interviews on current business themes
- Opportunities to connect with other businesses, experts and influencers.
All supported by an impressive list of partners including the Department of International Trade (DIT); The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, Yorkshire Bank and the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, not to mention a list of successful local businesses. For more details, visit www.jameslegal.co.uk/the-business-2017.
The Business Booster
‘James Legal – The Business 2017’ also includes a competition aimed at recognising and supporting outstanding local businesses. Called the ‘Business Booster’, we are encouraging promising small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) from across Yorkshire & the Humber to enter for a chance to win two prizes worth more than £15,000 each. We are looking to recognise businesses that show outstanding promise by offering a package of additional support to help them achieve their growth aspirations.
Our closing date for applications is 31 July 2017. The winning businesses will be chosen in September from a panel of judges including James Legal MD Nick Miller and Maureen Foers OBE, Owner of Durban Limited and Sponsor of Women’s Enterprise in the Humber.

FREE Masterclass – ‘International Trade Secrets for Businesses’
Our first business masterclass, taking place on Tuesday 28 March, will feature a keynote presentation by Stephan Stahl, International Trade Adviser for Hull & The Humber with the Department of International Trade (DIT), called ‘The beginning of the line not the end – are you making the most of Hull’s 2017 golden year?’. To find out more about this event, which will look at the scale of the international opportunity facing Hull businesses, and to book, visit www.jameslegal.co.uk/masterclasses.
How can you get involved?
- By booking on the first masterclass called ‘International Trade Secrets for Businesses’ – Stephan Stahl from the Department of International Trade quantifies the international trade opportunity facing Hull businesses and demonstrates how they can grasp it (www.jameslegal.co.uk/masterclasses)
- By entering the The Business Booster competition
- By becoming a campaign partner – helping to deliver the quarterly masterclass; contributing to blogs and information on business topics; offering an addition to the prize fund
- By sharing this opportunity with your contacts, who you believe could benefit from getting involved.
James Legal lawyer and MD, Nick Miller, added: “James Legal is Hull through and through, and we are bursting with pride and passion for our city and its surrounding region.
“We also believe in giving back and supporting our local community. We’ve been overwhelmed by the wealth of new opportunities for businesses that is arising as a knock-on effect of Hull’s status as 2017 City of Culture.
“Therefore, given our specialism in all aspects of business development, including law, collaborating with a range of trusted partners to create a campaign that might help act as a catalyst for growth seemed an appropriate focus for our giving this year and beyond.
“We hope as many local businesses as possible will take advantage of our masterclasses and enter the competition, which we hope will provide the support and inspiration they need to achieve more than they might have ever aspired to.”
