Design Inspiration Essentials

We love discovering and learning new things. And, a lot of the inspiration we get is from online resources and podcasts created by incredible individuals from around the world.

We’ve rustled up a list of our favourite places to go for insider knowledge and design tips that we know will be helpful to both designers and budding entrepreneurs.

Created by designer Ran Segall, Flux is a brilliant YouTube channel that documents the entrepreneur’s life and career.

Ran offers helpful design tips and inspiration, as well as giving an insight into the world of business. What we love about Ran is that his valuable advice can be applied to all sorts of industries and not only design.

We recommend his videos on how to begin freelancing and his playlist on building a portfolio.

The Deeply Graphic Design Cast.

Podcasts are a fantastic way to absorb information on-the-go. And, if you’re trying to run a business or do freelance design alongside a full-time job, they can fit easily into your already busy lives.

The Deeply Graphic Design-Cast is brimming with ideas, hints and tricks from designers that want to share their wealth of real-life experience. With over 100 episodes, you’re bound to discover something new.

Design Observer – The Design of Business | The Business of Design.

If you want to understand how design works in different companies, this podcast is for you. Recorded at the Yale School of Management, each episode features a guest that works in design or across various industries, from healthcare to architecture.

On top of this, the Design Observer website has a whole host of written and visual content to sink your teeth into. Their articles cover complex and current debates surrounding publishing, the media and design history.

Design Matters.

One of the longest-running design-centred podcasts, Design Matters certainly deserves a place on this list.

Debbie Millman, who was crowned “one of the most influential designers working today” by Graphic Design USA, first started this podcast over a decade ago. Since then, her interviews with influential creatives and household names have been downloaded around five million times per year.

Design Matters has a long list of advocates and supporters, including Business Insider, Adobe, Creative Bloq, Shopify and Canva.

The Futur.

One of our personal go-tos for inspiration is The Futur. Teaming with content to help creative professionals, this extensive bible-like resource provides guidance on everything design and business-related.

We think this is a wonderful place for creatives to develop their more corporate, professional skills, such as selling and pitching and generating leads.
