And it is. Prices vary enormously, everyone seems to have a different opinion on what you need, and it isn't always obvious what you're actually paying for.

You might be quoted £500 by one provider and £5,000 by another for what sounds like the same thing. Neither quote is necessarily wrong, but there's a good chance they're offering very different services, and you might not necessarily need all of them.

At Peaco Marketing, we work with businesses of different sizes, from startups finding their feet to established companies looking to generate more enquiries online. One thing we're always keen to establish before recommending a new website is whether it's actually the right investment for the business.

Before spending your hard-earned money, here are some questions worth asking.

1. What Do I Actually Need My Website to Do?

This is probably the most important question, and it's one that's surprisingly easy to overlook when you start looking at designs.

For some businesses, a website is essentially a digital business card. You want people to find you after hearing about your business, understand what you offer and get in touch. A relatively simple website might be all you need.

For others, the website is expected to generate a consistent stream of new customers through Google, take bookings or sell products online. That's a different proposition entirely and will usually require more planning.

Think about what success would look like six months after launching. If you can't explain what you want the website to achieve, it's difficult to know whether you're getting good value from the investment.

2. Do I Need an Expensive Website?

Not necessarily, and we'd be wary of anyone telling you otherwise without understanding your business.

If you're a sole trader starting out, spending thousands on a custom-built website might not be your best use of money. A professionally configured template could provide everything you need while leaving some budget available to promote the business.

On the other hand, an established company relying heavily on its website for enquiries may benefit from a more tailored approach, particularly if the existing website has limitations affecting sales.

Think of it like buying a company vehicle. A small van might do everything you need, while a larger business could require something more specialised. There's little point paying for features you'll never use, but buying the cheapest option isn't particularly good value if you outgrow it almost immediately either.

3. How Will People Find My Website?

This is something we'd encourage every business owner to consider before agreeing to a website build.

Launching a website doesn't automatically mean customers will find it on Google. You can have an excellent-looking website that attracts virtually no visitors if you haven't considered how people will discover it.

If attracting customers through search engines is part of your plan, ask your web designer what SEO is included. Will they research what potential customers search for? Will the website have dedicated pages for your main services? Is the content being written with both customers and search engines in mind?

Google's own SEO Starter Guide emphasises the importance of creating useful content and organising websites in a way that helps visitors and search engines understand them.

It's also worth considering whether Google is actually where your first customers are likely to come from. For a new local business, word of mouth, networking or social media might initially be more practical ways to attract enquiries. SEO might not even be relevant.

The important thing is having a plan rather than assuming visitors will appear once the website goes live.

4. What Am I Actually Paying For?

Website quotes can be surprisingly difficult to compare, particularly when one provider offers an all-inclusive package and another charges separately for different elements.

Before accepting a quote, make sure you understand what's included. Who's writing the content? Are you expected to supply images? Will the website work properly on mobile phones? Is basic SEO setup included, and what happens if something doesn't work after launch?

You'll also want to establish whether there are ongoing costs. Hosting, domain renewals, software licences and maintenance can all add to the total cost of owning a website.

A £500 website with expensive monthly fees could eventually cost more than a £1,500 website with reasonable ongoing charges. That doesn't automatically make either option better, but it's worth looking beyond the initial price.

Ask for a clear breakdown before committing so you understand both the upfront investment and what you'll be paying in future.

5. Will I Own My Website?

This is one question we'd strongly encourage every business owner to ask, particularly if you're signing up for a monthly website package.

Some providers build websites on platforms that make it relatively straightforward to move elsewhere. Others operate more restrictive systems, meaning transferring your website to another company could be difficult or potentially impossible without rebuilding it.

Make sure you understand who owns the domain name, whether you'll have access to the website and what happens if you decide to stop working with your current provider.

You should also ask whether you can make simple changes yourself, such as updating opening hours, adding photographs or changing service information.

There's nothing wrong with paying somebody to manage your website, but you shouldn't feel trapped if your business needs change.

6. What Happens After the Website Goes Live?

A website isn't necessarily a one-off purchase that can be forgotten about for the next five years.

Software needs updating, content may need changing and businesses naturally evolve. If you're using a platform such as WordPress, ongoing maintenance can also be important for security and compatibility.

Before launch, establish who will be responsible for keeping everything working and what support is available if something breaks. Some website packages include ongoing maintenance, while others hand everything over to you.

It's also worth asking how you'll know whether the website is performing. Even a small business can benefit from basic analytics that show how people find the website and whether visitors are getting in touch.

You don't need complicated monthly reports, but you should have some way of understanding whether your investment is delivering what you hoped.

Our Advice? Start With What Your Business Actually Needs

There's no perfect website budget or package that suits every business. A startup working from a spare bedroom has different requirements from an established company with a dedicated sales team, and that's absolutely fine.

We'd encourage business owners to start with a clear understanding of what they want their website to achieve, then find a provider who can explain how they'll help deliver it. A good web designer should be comfortable discussing your budget, questioning whether you really need certain features and explaining what you can realistically expect.

Remember, your website doesn't have to be the biggest or most expensive in your industry. It needs to represent your business professionally and help potential customers take the next step.

About the author: Joshua Pearson is the founder of Peaco Marketing, a Hull-based digital marketing agency helping businesses improve their online visibility and generate more enquiries through SEO, paid advertising and website optimisation.

Whether you're launching your first business or you've been trading for years, investing in a new website can feel like a big decision.
