For some, a handful of sessions is all they need to gain perspective, make an important decision, or navigate a difficult period in their lives.

But there's a question we don't ask often enough:

Why six?

Why not three?

Why not twelve?

Why not one?

When it comes to mental health and emotional wellbeing, it's worth asking whether recovery, resilience and personal growth can really be measured by a predetermined number.

The Challenge with Fixed Limits

The reality is that no two people arrive at counselling with the same needs.

One person might be seeking support with:

Workplace stress

A major life decision

Relationship difficulties

Loss of confidence

Another might be dealing with:

Bereavement

Long-standing anxiety

Depression

Childhood experiences that continue to affect them decades later

Both are valid reasons to seek support.

But they're unlikely to require the same number of sessions.

That's why fixed-session models can sometimes feel at odds with the reality of human experience.

Some People Need Two Sessions. NHS Talking Therapies data shows that approximately 50% of people who complete treatment move to recovery, while almost 68% demonstrate reliable improvement in their symptoms. These are encouraging results, but they also highlight an important reality: there is no one-size-fits-all pathway to improvement.

The Problem with Measuring Support by Session Count

When support is structured around a fixed allocation of sessions, it can unintentionally create an expectation:

"After six sessions, I should be better."

But emotional wellbeing doesn't operate to a timetable.

Grief doesn't know when funding runs out.

Anxiety doesn't consult a calendar before deciding whether it's resolved.

And personal growth rarely happens in neat six-week blocks.

Sometimes six sessions is enough.

Sometimes it's the start of a much longer journey.

The issue isn't the number itself.

The issue is assuming it will be the right answer for everyone.

What Happens When Someone Starts to Open Up?

One of the concerns people often raise about counselling is the fear of "opening a can of worms."

It's not the most elegant phrase, but it's one many people recognise.

The concern usually sounds something like:

"What if I start talking about things I've spent years trying not to think about?"

It's a fair question.

Counselling often creates space for conversations that have been avoided, postponed, or carefully packed away.

Sometimes that brings relief.

Sometimes it uncovers deeper issues that need more attention than originally expected.

In fact, many practitioners would argue that one of the most important outcomes of the early stages of therapy is gaining a clearer understanding of the problem itself. What initially appears to be workplace stress may actually be linked to grief, burnout, relationship difficulties, loss of confidence, or long-standing patterns of anxiety.

That's not a sign that counselling has failed.

In many cases, it's a sign that it's working.

The challenge comes when support ends just as meaningful work is beginning.

Support Shouldn't End with a Cliff Edge

Most people understand that resources aren't unlimited.

Organisations have budgets.

Services have capacity.

Support programmes need boundaries.

The issue isn't that support has limits.

The issue is what happens next.

Good support shouldn't feel like:

"Your six sessions are finished.
