At HBTC, we take pride in seeing our apprentices grow, achieve, and go on to make a real impact in their chosen careers. One inspiring example of this is\u00a0Mackauly<\/strong>, who first joined HBTC as an apprentice in 2014.<\/h4>\n

Starting by completing his\u00a0Business Administration NVQ Level 2<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Customer Service NVQ Level 3<\/strong>, before progressing onto his\u00a0Team Leader\/Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard<\/strong>, Mackauly\u2019s dedication and drive have seen him go from learner to leader, and he is now proudly our\u00a0Recruitment Supervisor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Starting the Journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When Mackauly first came across the apprenticeship opportunity through the\u00a0Find an Apprenticeship<\/a><\/em>\u00a0service, he was intrigued by the varied duties the role offered.\u00a0\u201cI saw the apprenticeship had varied duties which keeps you interested, and equally had challenges, so it kept you on your toes,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he recalls.<\/p>\n

At the time, apprenticeships were still something new to him.\u00a0\u201cI hadn\u2019t heard about apprenticeships much in 2014,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he explains.\u00a0\u201cAll I knew of apprenticeships was for hands-on-based roles like bricklaying and joinery, so I didn\u2019t know what to expect from an office-based apprenticeship.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the uncertainty, he threw himself into the challenge. Those first few weeks were a mix of learning and adapting,\u00a0\u201clike being the new student in high school,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he says, but the apprenticeship helped lay the foundations for the confidence and professionalism he\u2019s known for today.<\/p>\n

Growing Skills and Confidence<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Throughout his apprenticeship, Mackauly developed a broad set of skills that continue to serve him in his current role. Negotiation, problem-solving, complaint handling, customer service, time management, and organisation have all become part of his professional toolkit.<\/p>\n

He also experienced significant personal growth.\u00a0\u201cI lacked confidence a lot in 2014,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he admits,\u00a0\u201cbut ask my colleagues now, I can\u2019t stop talking!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Don\u2019t we know!) Professionally, he\u2019s taken on responsibilities such as handling objections, marketing the apprenticeship scheme, and consistently meeting company targets.<\/p>\n

Standing Out and Moving Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of Mackauly\u2019s key achievements during his apprenticeship was introducing a careers events management tool to help HBTC stay organised and maintain strong connections with career advisors across local schools.<\/p>\n

Since then, he\u2019s continued to excel, earning a\u00a0Distinction<\/strong>\u00a0in his\u00a0Team Leader\/Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship<\/strong>\u00a0and stepping into his current role as\u00a0Recruitment Supervisor<\/strong>. In this position, Mackauly connects candidates with apprenticeship opportunities, carries out health and safety assessments, manages funding and compliance paperwork, and supports business development by helping employers find the right apprentice for their team.<\/p>\n

Learning to Lead<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The apprenticeship didn\u2019t just help Mackauly find a job; it shaped his entire career direction.\u00a0\u201cThe apprenticeship helped me realise exactly what I wanted to do,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he says.\u00a0\u201cI always wanted to be an important part of a company and have the responsibility to lead a team to achieve targets.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Now, with his sights set on continuing to grow into a management role, Mackauly is committed to applying everything he\u2019s learned and being a role model for new apprentices starting their own journey.<\/p>\n

His advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship?\u00a0\u201cGo for it, but research it first!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He encourages others to understand that an apprenticeship isn\u2019t just a job with one day at college, it\u2019s a full learning experience that builds real skills, knowledge, and confidence for the future.<\/p>\n

And his motto for success?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cApply yourself every day, and once you\u2019ve reached the top, reach for the top again!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(very inspirational).<\/p>\n
